Inspired by legacy, love, and music, Boogie Chillen Bourbon, an ultra-premium whiskey brand, was founded by mother and son Zakiya Hooker and Glenn Thomas in 2023 to honor their father and grandfather, John Lee Hooker, and their shared love of bourbon.

Considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, John Lee Hooker was a four-time Grammy award-winning blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Born in Tutwiler, Mississippi, on August 22, 1917, Hooker began playing guitar at a young age, greatly influenced by his stepfather William Moore, a blues musician. Moore taught his young stepson to play the guitar, later credited for shaping Hooker’s unique style on the instrument.

Shaped by his grandfather’s love of music and bourbon, Glenn was mesmerized by the stories that his grandfather's guitar weaved, the raw emotion that poured from his voice, and most importantly, the bourbon in his glass; and on his 21st birthday, Glenn was finally able to enjoy a glass with by his grandfather.

Unaware of the nuances of how to properly sip whiskey, Glenn quickly downed the bourbon and was unimpressed with the taste as it burned deep in his chest. Encouraged to try again, his grandfather poured him another glass and instructed him how to sip whiskey and live life.

His late grandfather explained that life is like drinking bourbon. “If you drink bourbon too fast and recklessly, you will get burned, but if you take your time and enjoy the ride, you will have a great drink and a great life.”
