Sakhrani Distillery: Two Women, One Forest, and a New Chapter for Japanese Whisky

24/06/2026 The story of Sakhrani Distillery begins with an unlikely partnership.

One woman arrived in Okinawa after a life shaped by international travel and entrepreneurship. The other belonged to a family whose distilling history stretches back five generations in the forests of Yanbaru. Together, Sabrina Sakhrani and Ayako Ikehara set out to create a whisky that could speak not only of Japan, but of a specific corner of Japan rarely associated with whisky at all.

The result is Sakhrani Distillery, a women-led producer based in Okinawa's northern forest region, where subtropical conditions, rare Japanese woods, and local craftsmanship are helping shape a distinctive new whisky identity.

Located in Yanbaru, the subtropical forest region in northern Okinawa, Sakhrani represents a new generation of whisky producers focused on expressing place rather than following established conventions. At the heart of the project are two women whose backgrounds and experiences converge around a shared vision for what Okinawan whisky can become. Founder Sabrina Sakhrani, born in Italy and shaped by years of international travel, joined forces with fifth-generation master distiller Ayako Ikehara, whose family roots in Yanbaru stretch back decades. Together, they have created a whisky brand that combines local heritage with a distinctly contemporary outlook.

The partnership itself is central to the story.

Sakhrani describes itself as a women-led whisky producer, a notable distinction within a category historically dominated by men. Every bottle reflects the work of female distillers, blenders, and makers who oversee the creation of the spirit from concept to final release. Rather than positioning this as a marketing exercise, the distillery presents it as a different perspective on craftsmanship, one rooted in patience, attention to detail, and a deep respect for the surrounding environment.

That environment is impossible to ignore.

Yanbaru is one of Japan's most ecologically significant regions, recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage area and known for its dense forests, biodiversity, and pristine water sources. The landscape is dramatically different from the cooler climates traditionally associated with whisky production. Here, subtropical conditions influence maturation, while the surrounding forest provides both inspiration and identity. Sakhrani's whiskies are refined using water sourced from the region surrounding Ogimi Village, a community internationally recognised for the longevity of its residents. The connection between land, water, and community runs throughout the brand's philosophy.

The distillery's approach to maturation further distinguishes its whiskies.

Rather than focusing on a single expression, Sakhrani has built its portfolio around what it calls "The Trilogy" - three whiskies finished in rare Japanese woods that each tell a different story.

The Mizunara Edition explores the character of Japan's famed Mizunara oak, a wood prized for its rarity and distinctive aromatic qualities. The whisky develops layers of warm spice, sandalwood, incense, and cedar, creating a contemplative style that unfolds gradually in the glass. The Kuri Edition takes a different path, using Japanese chestnut wood to produce a richer profile featuring caramel, peach, nutmeg, and subtle roasted notes. Completing the trilogy is the Sakura Edition, finished in cherry blossom wood and designed to highlight elegance, floral nuances, and delicate fruit character. Across the range, the whiskies are bottled at 47% ABV, non-chill filtered, and without added colouring, allowing the influence of the wood and spirit to remain at the forefront.

The market has responded positively.

At the 2025 USA Spirits Ratings, the Kuri Edition was awarded Gold and named Blended Scotch of the Year, while the Mizunara Edition also earned Gold, and the Sakura Edition received a Silver Medal. The recognition was followed by further success at the 2026 Bartender Spirits Awards, where the Kuri and Mizunara expressions again received Gold Medals. For a young brand, the awards provide validation of a vision that places equal importance on quality, originality, and a strong sense of place.

Yet Sakhrani's ambitions extend beyond whisky alone.

The company has built a broader identity around stewardship and community. A portion of every bottle sold supports initiatives in Ogimi Village, helping preserve local traditions and supporting the community that provides the water, climate, and cultural foundations that shape the brand. The distillery also emphasises the use of sustainably harvested Japanese woods and a production philosophy intended to honour both the natural environment and the generations that have lived alongside it.

What ultimately makes Sakhrani noteworthy is not simply that it produces whisky in Okinawa. It is that the distillery has embraced Okinawa as more than a location.

The forests of Yanbaru, the rare Japanese woods used in maturation, the expertise of a fifth-generation distiller, and the perspective of a women-led team all contribute to a whisky identity that feels inseparable from its origin. Rather than borrowing credibility from established whisky traditions, Sakhrani is building its own.

For a region better known internationally for its longevity than its whisky, that may prove to be its most significant contribution. Sakhrani is demonstrating that great spirits do not need to imitate the past. Sometimes they emerge from places that have been quietly waiting for their story to be told.
