14/04/2026 With the registrations for the 2026 Bartender Spirits Awards closing in days, here's everything spirits brands need to know before the deadline

Bartenders are not simply pouring. They are influencing. Their tastes shape cocktail menus, guide consumer choices, and drive repeat orders in ways that no shelf placement or advertising campaign can replicate. For spirits brands targeting the U.S. on-premise channel, getting in front of the right bartenders is one of the most valuable, and most difficult, things to achieve.

The 2026 Bartender Spirits Awards exists to bridge exactly that gap. Registration closes on April 16, 2026. This is the final opportunity to enter the 8th edition of the United States' leading spirits competition judged entirely by the people behind the bar.

What Is the Bartender Spirits Awards?

The Bartender Spirits Awards was built around a single guiding principle: to provide independent and honest reviews for brands targeting the U.S. bar trade. Judged by bartenders, bar managers and on-premise buyers,  it is designed to answer the question that matters most to spirits brands: will working bartenders stock this and pour it?

The judging panel consists of some of the most renowned names in the U.S. bar industry, all with extensive expertise within the on-premise industry. The result is a relevant and practical source of reference for bartenders, bar managers, bar owners, and other industry professionals when making purchasing decisions for their establishments.

Now in its 8th edition, the competition is a practical, independent, unbiased evaluation for brands targeting the U.S. on-premise trade, giving buyers a trusted reference when making purchasing decisions.

How Are Spirits Judged?

Every spirit is blind-tasted first across three core criteria, then evaluated on price and packaging separately, ensuring that initial scores reflect only what is in the glass. The full scoring formula is:

M (Mixability) + B (Balance & Versatility) + T (Taste, Mouthfeel & Finish) + P (Package) + V (Value) = Bartender Spirits Awards Final Score

The three judging steps work as follows:

Step 1 — Blind Tasting: Spirits are presented by category, style, and origin. Judges score each entry on Mixability (how well the spirit works in cocktails), Balance and Versatility (flavour, aroma, and back-bar suitability), and Taste, Mouthfeel and Finish (the full sensory experience from first sip to finish).

Step 2 — Price Score Evaluation: After blind tasting is complete, judges are presented with the retail price. The value score reflects whether the quality of the spirit is in keeping with what a bartender and consumer would reasonably expect to pay.

Step 3 — Packaging Evaluation: Judges assess each bottle on creative design, label quality, back-bar appeal, and functionality — including shape, size, weight, and ease of pouring.

Each criterion is scored out of 100 first, then a separate weighted score is applied. Entrants receive detailed feedback across every individual criterion.

Medal Thresholds:

  • Double Gold: 96 points and above
  • Gold: 90–95 points
  • Silver: 85–89 points
  • Bronze: 80–84 points

Why Should Your Brand Enter?

1. Raise the Profile of Your Spirits: Winning a Bartender Spirits Award is a mark of excellence recognised across the drinks industry. A medal signals to buyers, distributors, bartenders, and consumers that your spirit has been evaluated against the rigorous, on-premise-specific standards that the back-bar demands — and earned its place there.

2. Get in Front of a Hard-to-Reach Audience: The 2026 judging panel brings together on-premise professionals from across the U.S., evaluating entries on taste, packaging, and value — the key factors that determine what bartenders choose to stock and pour. Confirmed 2026 judges include Monique Huston, Vice President of Spirits Portfolio at Winebow Fine Wine + Spirits, Anna Thorn, Director of Bar & Spirits at Hogsalt Chicago, and Miranda Breedlove and David Samuel from Hyatt Hotels. These are not spectators — they are active buyers with real purchasing power.

3. Get Scores Feedback: Every entrant receives a detailed score breakdown across each individual judging criterion: Mixability (M), Balance and Versatility (B), Taste, Mouthfeel and Finish (T), Package (P), and Value (V). Whether you medal or not, this gives you a direct, professional read on exactly where your spirit stands — and where there is room to improve.

4. Get Market Feedback: Beyond the numbers, the competition gives you qualitative intelligence on how your spirit sits in the current on-premise market. Is it suited for high-volume cocktail programs? Is the category or style in demand right now? Is the price-to-quality ratio working for bartenders building back-bar budgets? These are the questions that shape real buying decisions, answered by people who ask them every day.

5. Get Listed and Showcased Across the BTN Network: Winners receive year-round exposure across Beverage Trade Network's full media ecosystem, including the winners carousel on Bartender Business, San Francisco Drinks Guide, New York Drinks Guide, Chicago Drinks Guide, Los Angeles Drinks Guide, and Beverage Trade Network. Top 100 winners also receive dedicated "Stock This Spirit" editorial coverage and social media promotion on Bartender Business — targeted directly at the on-premise professionals making purchase decisions.

6. Give the Consumer a Stamp of Approval: A Bartender Spirits Awards medal on your bottle sends an immediate signal at the point of purchase: this spirit has been evaluated and approved by working bartenders — the industry's most trusted tastemakers. In a crowded back-bar environment, that kind of peer-validated credibility matters to consumers and trade buyers alike.

7. Get Professional Tasting Notes: Each judge writes an individual tasting note, which is then curated by an expert into one unified, publication-ready note. These are delivered in PDF format, designed as ready-to-print shelf talkers — cut into four individual talkers for immediate retail and on-premise merchandising use.

8. Distributor-Ready Certificates: Winners receive certificates featuring a QR code that verifies the award and links directly to further brand information. These are designed specifically for distributor sales reps to use when pitching to bar managers and bartenders across the U.S. — turning your medal into a tangible sales tool in the field.

Who Is Judging in 2026?

The Bartender Spirits Awards 2026 judging panel represents every corner of the industry — from bar program design and distillation to hotel operations and distribution. Their collective experience ensures that each entry is evaluated for both quality and commercial relevance.

The panel includes Miranda Breedlove from Hyatt Hotels, Anna Thorn from Hogsalt, and David Samuel, Regional Vice President of Operations at Hyatt Hotels Corporation, alongside spirits experts, beverage directors, and working bartenders from across the United States. Zachary Faden has also been confirmed as the panel's expert for Bourbon for the 2026 competition.
