The Bartender Spirits Awards is pleased to announce that Alexis Ortega, the reigning U.S. Bartender of the Year, has joined its judging panel.

Ortega claimed the national title at the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation Presents World Class sponsored by Diageo U.S. Finals. The competition brought together 15 of the country’s leading bartenders for a series of challenges testing creativity, technical ability, speed, storytelling, flavour balance and hospitality under pressure.

His victory earned him the opportunity to represent the United States at the Diageo World Class Global Finals in Scotland, where he will compete alongside leading bartenders from around the world.

Based in Philadelphia, Ortega brings more than 20 years of hospitality experience and has built his career both behind the bar and on the restaurant floor. He currently works at Static, a welcoming Philadelphia cocktail bar known for its fun and approachable drinks, as well as Vetri Cucina, one of the city’s acclaimed fine-dining restaurants.

Working across these contrasting environments has given Ortega a broad perspective on what makes a drink successful. He understands how spirits must perform in creative cocktail programs, premium dining settings and fast-moving bar service while still delivering quality, consistency, value and an enjoyable guest experience.

A National Title Built on Creativity and Hospitality

The World Class U.S. Finals challenged competitors to demonstrate far more than their ability to create an impressive cocktail. Bartenders were evaluated on technical precision, flavour development, speed, presentation, storytelling, and their ability to connect with guests.

Ortega distinguished himself by combining elevated technique with accessibility and genuine hospitality. His presentations drew inspiration from his personal journey and Philadelphia’s diverse immigrant communities, translating cultural influences, ingredients and neighbourhood stories into thoughtful cocktails.

This balance between creativity and approachability is central to his philosophy behind the bar. For Ortega, a successful cocktail must be technically accomplished, but it must also be enjoyable, relevant and welcoming to the person ordering it.

That perspective will be particularly valuable at the Bartender Spirits Awards, where spirits are assessed for their suitability within real bars and restaurants.
